The Center for the American Experience

The Center for the American Experience (CAE) at The New School is a faculty-led initiative that brings together design, the performing arts, the social sciences, and the humanities to examine the complex past, present, and future of the United States and its place in the world and in our lives. CAE is dedicated to interdisciplinary scholarship, creative practice, innovative pedagogy, and bold civic engagement.

Guided by the complementary perspectives of a historian and a media sociologist, CAE explores the ideas, histories, myths, cultures, and debates that have shaped American life. At a moment defined by political polarization, challenges to democracy, and profound changes in how information is created, shared, and understood—from social media to artificial intelligence—the Center examines the forces shaping American culture, public life, and democracy. By connecting perspectives across disciplines and communities on campus and beyond, the Center embraces the multiplicity of the American experience.

Building on The New School's longstanding commitment to cultural pluralism—a theory articulated by philosopher Horace Kallen, one of the university's earliest faculty members—CAE brings diverse perspectives into conversation not to sharpen divisions, but to cultivate understanding, discover common ground, and imagine new possibilities.

Through public programs, exhibitions, performances, and collaborative research, CAE convenes scholars, artists, students, and the broader public to explore the American experience and its enduring questions together.

Faculty Co-Directors:
Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, Professor of History
Julia Sonnevend, Associate Professor of Sociology

Raz Godelnik

Raz Godelnik is an Associate Professor of Strategic Design and Management at the School of Design Strategies, where he explores sustainable business models, design for 1.5°C lifestyles, and how companies can respond effectively to the climate crisis. His book, Rethinking Corporate Sustainability in the Era of Climate Crisis: A Strategic Design Approach, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2021. Currently, Raz serves as the Associate Director of the BBA Strategic Design and Management Program.

Raz teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in innovation, leadership, sustainable design, business models, and strategic design. His research focuses on developing sustainable business models, designing low-carbon lifestyles, and helping companies move beyond sustainability-as-usual. He also led a collaboration between Parsons students and refugees in Berlin, working together on entrepreneurial initiatives to address refugee needs in cities and refugee camps.

Raz served as the Co-Director of the MS Strategic Design and Management program from 2015 to 2018 and as the Director of the BBA Strategic Design and Management program from 2022 to 2024. He is the co-founder of two green startups, Hemper Jeans and Eco-Libris, and writes regularly on issues related to sustainable business, climate change, and strategic design. He holds an MBA from Tel Aviv University and a BA in Communication and Economics from the Hebrew University.

Koray Caliskan

Koray Caliskan is an economic sociologist and organizational designer. He is a tenured Associate Professor of Strategic Design and Management at Parsons School of Design, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Design Strategies, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Cultural Economy. He designed the strategy for MaMame, a social innovation project that combines cooperative and LLC structures to support underrepresented women's labor; this initiative received the Entrepreneurship of the Year Award from Microsoft in 2017. Caliskan has directed and produced several award-winning fiction and documentary films, including Esma, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. He co-founded The Wrong Department, a strategic design studio with offices in London and New York City. His recent research on cryptocurrencies earned the Scientific Breakthrough of the Year Award in Social Sciences from the Falling Walls Foundation in 2021 and was mentioned in Financial Times as a way to understand the US and its economy. This work culminated in the book “Data Money: Inside Cryptocurrencies and Their Communities, Blockchains, and Markets” published by Columbia University Press in September 2023. Currently, with support from an ESRC (UK) grant, he is researching the economic sociology of online advertisements. In 2025, he is set to publish two co-authored books: "Economization: Markets, Platforms, and Ecologies" with Michel Callon and Donald MacKenzie (Columbia University Press), and "Inside Digital Advertising: Platform Power, Data Icebergs, and Material Politics" with Donald MacKenzie (Polity Press).
